Beware! Junk food can cost your health!
Major diseases are lurking at our dining tables as we find more fast foods to be delectable and convenient compared to homemade food and it doesn’t end there, as a study has revealed that buns used for burgers and pizza bases in some countries have carcinogenic ingredients which are used to make them crispier, tastier and addictive.
However, there has not been a major study in Oman as far as how dangerous these junk foods are and hence the question of how safer and healthier these pizzas and burgers are.
A study conducted by India’s Centre for Science and Environment’s (CSE) Pollution Monitoring Laboratory, says Indian bread manufacturers use potassium bromate and potassium iodate for treating flour while making bread.
Both the chemicals, banned in several countries, can cause cancer of kidneys and thyroid glands and thyroid disorders. Potassium
bromate is widely used as it is allowed by law and offers high-quality finish to the final product.
Having said that there has not been a major study as far as fast foods in Oman are concerned, since almost all international brands have a common business ethos of maintaining the same flavour and taste of their products throughout the world, chances are, many of them which are sold here too can have such contents, experts say.
“Consumption of junk foods could be one of the reasons for getting cancer if a person is taking too much of such food because junk foods contain lot of preservatives and colouring agents which can be proved in simple tests at our home itself,” says Mini Padilla, a clinical nutritionist at a local hospital.
